South Africa's growing demand for broadband services is not being sufficiently met by the market. Less than 1% of all South Africans have high speed Internet access. Growth in Digital Subscriber Line Service (DSL) is being constrained both by availability and by costs. Current 3G Mobile Data Services are "narrowband" technologies and are not a true substitute for broadband. As a result, many South African consumers still rely upon low speed dial up internet access.




Access to affordable and available broadband is key catalyst for driving economic growth across the developing world. To remain competitive in a global economy, South African consumers need and deserve access to affordable and reliable high speed internet access and IP Communications Services. Through innovation and technology, DBI will expand the availability of IP Communications services and Broadband Access in South Africa.



First to Market

DBI will take advantage of the "first to market" opportunity provided by the LTE-Advanced standard technology to rapidly establish a national network footprint throughout South Africa including within the underserved communities. DBI will combine an aggressive marketing and sales campaigns and strategic partnerships with South African municipalities and other regional operators to exponentially expand the overall broadband market in South Africa.

DBI's technology strategy will focus on providing customers with access to the most reliable, cost effective and state of the art broadband network in South Afirca.

DBI intends to deploy an LTE-Advanced Network coupled with a WiFi Mesh Network for additional capacity relief that will enable DBI to more effectively realize both cost and technology efficiency objectives which will benefit our customers.

LTE-Advanced (Release 10) is the latest 3GPP International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) standards-based technology that enables the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable, satellite and DSL.LTE-Advanced will provide fixed, nomadic, portable, and mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight to a base station. With LTE-Advanced, the focus is on higher capacity meaning:

  • Increased peak data rate, DL 1.0 Gbps, UL 0.5 Gbps
  • Higher spectral efficiency, from a maximum of 30 bps/Hz in Rel. 10
  • Increased number of simultaneously active subscribers
  • Improved performance at cell edges
  • New Relay technology also useful for coverage gaps and indoor coverage
  • Carrier Aggregation allows for combining up to five LTE Release 8 compatible carriers thus increasing the transmission bandwidth, and enhancing data rates for end-users
  • Advanced Multi-antenna or MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology provides the ability to transmit and receive with multiple antennas to provide higher system capacity

Other advantages of an LTE-Advanced Network coupled with a WiFi Mesh Network include:

  • Advanced IP-based architecture which includes IMS support to facilitate a rapid, low cost rollout of new applications and services as well as interworking with 3G and other technologies
